A year in a bakery

It was a very sad week as I said “goodbye” to Mickael’s Bakery and “see ya later” to the lovely bakers who are now friends.

I started working with Payton, Tich and Brenda in February — I wanted a brief interlude chapter between Peterborough Currents and whatever was next in my career and I’m so happy to made the call. I thought, “if I can do anything for just a year, what would I want to try? …. Baking!” And what a fun chapter of my life it has been!

I’ve learned a ton — not so much about baking but about myself and community connection and working together to feed people. It was funny going from journalism, which has a somewhat intangible positive impact on community to selling French bread and running a café where the impact happens right in front of your eyes.

I’m going to miss my regulars at the Omemee café and most of all my coworkers. But now… on to full-time film and sound art making!
